Fukyugata is practiced universally in the main styles of Okinawan karate, "Fukyu" means promotional; something to be spread or shared. "Gata" is simply an alternate pronunciation of "kata" (the letter "k" changes to "g" when the character is preceded by another word or term). Fukyugata Ni therefore, may be thought of as the second basic, promotional kata.

There are two sets of Fukyugata. These kata were developed by Shoshin Nagamine (Matsubayashi-ryu) and Chojun Miyagi (Goju-ryu). They were developed as beginner kata because the more traditional kata were too difficult for beginners.
